OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Silver Skillet will look to rebound from a fifth-place finish in last month’s Yaddo Stakes at Saratoga while attempting to turn around the fortunes of trainer Christophe Clement’s frustrating Belmont at the Big A fall meet when she starts as the potential favorite in Thursday’s $125,000 John Hettinger Stakes for New York-bred females. The Hettinger, scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on the outer turf, tops an eight-race Thursday card at Aqueduct that includes a pick six carryover of $44,860. The sequence, which starts in race 3 [2:07 p.m. Eastern] includes the Hettinger, three other turf races, and a stakes-caliber dirt allowance that drew a whopping 13 horses. There was some rain in the forecast Wednesday and Thursday, but just how much is not defined. The Hettinger drew nine for the turf, plus four main-track-only entrants. Silver Skillet won the off-the-turf Mount Vernon at Saratoga in June and the four-horse Port Washington on turf here in July. Sent off the even-money favorite in the Yaddo, Silver Skillet was wide throughout, never achieved the forward position she had in her previous two victories and finished fifth, beaten 5 3/4 lengths by 13-1 shot Moonage Daydream. “She ran well below form, very disappointed; I was very puzzled by the race,” Clement said. “She’s been training well. If the turf is firm, she’ll be very competitive. If it’s off the grass, she’ll be very competitive. If it’s run on soft turf, it’s a question mark.” :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Clement, who is 1 for 26 with an additonal 14 in-the-money finishes at the meet, also said the 1 1/8 miles is a question mark for Silver Skillet, who has never run that distance. Marvelous Maude is one of just three horses in the nine-horse field to have a win at 1 1/8 miles on turf. She was third in the Port Washington and second in the Yaddo. Marvelous Maude, trained by Chad Brown, has a 0-2-2 record from five Aqueduct starts. “She’s come back into form. I liked her last race, expected her to run well,” trainer Chad Brown said. Moonage Daydream heads a three-horse uncoupled entry for trainer Jorge Abreu. Moonage Daydream, a bit headstrong early in the Yaddo, ultimately settled down the backside and saw out the 1 1/16 miles, her first try going that far. Now, she must navigate an additional sixteenth of a mile. “Moonage Daydream is doing really well. I like her a lot,” Abreu said. “I liked her going into the last race, the way she was training, and she’s doing the same thing now.” Abreu said he could not find suitable races for Busy Morning or Scoring Chance – the latter has never run on turf – so they wound up in this spot. Can’t Fool Me, trained by Horacio De Paz, makes her stakes debut off a sharp allowance score at Saratoga. She is 2 for 3 at nine furlongs. Whatlovelookslike, trained by Todd Pletcher, was third in the Yaddo, her first start off a nine-month layoff. Snowy Evening and Power and Glory complete the field on turf. The Hettinger goes as race 6 and is the fourth leg of the pick six. Some other pick six highlights: Race 3: New York Scrappy was a close third in his last start, a mile maiden turf race, and has a sharp dirt workout leading to this start, a 1 1/16-mile maiden turf race. Daybright Delights, who finished right in front of New York Scrappy last out, and Amplitude are others to consider. Race 4: Beautiful Love was the third next-out winner from a June 6 maiden race when she won at Saratoga on Aug. 17. She could win right back though she faces many more experienced foes. Linarite is 1 for 19 but has 14 in-the-money finishes and should get pace. She Takes Cash turns back in distance, gets Dylan Davis. Race 5: It’s now or never for Sendera in this weak maiden $30,000 claimer at six furlongs. Race 7: It’s been a long time since Untreated won, but his previous two wins came in one-mile allowance races at Aqueduct. He gets blinkers and pace in this stakes-caliber allowance. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Blazing Sevens is 2 for 2 at a mile at Aqueduct, including the Grade 1 Champagne in 2022 and a second-level allowance win here in April.
