Silent Sonet scores big upset in Ontario Fashion Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The accomplished Ami’s Mesa was favored in Sunday’s $141,850 Ontario Fashion Stakes at Woodbine, but it was the other Ivan Dalos-owned runner, Silent Sonet, who stole the show at 56-1 in the Grade 3 event.
With David Moran aboard, Silent Sonet tracked the leading Code Warrior and Jessie Campbell through moderate fractions in the six-furlong sprint. Silent Sonet took control around the eighth pole and then held off a surging Jessica Krupnick to prevail by a half-length in a quick time of 1:08.77.
Moonlit Promise finished another half-length back in third, as Code Warrior faded to fourth. Last year’s Canadian champion female sprinter, Ami’s Mesa was a nonthreatening seventh in the 12-horse field.
“She broke good, and I sat beside Jessie,” Moran said. “Actually, I thought Jessie had more horse turning for home, but when I asked my girl, she switched leads, and she quickened up nice. It was great.”
A daughter of Silent Name trained by Nick Gonzalez, Silent Sonet banked $90,000 as the third-longest shot on the board.
“This filly has been doing so great for us,” Gonzalez said. “The cold weather didn’t hurt. She really didn’t deserve to be 56-1, in my mind.”
