Siblings to stars each get a maiden win

ELMONT, N.Y. – In a span of 48 hours, siblings to 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb and 2009 Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra recorded wins of their own at Belmont Park.
On Friday, Emancipation, a 3-year-old full brother to Orb, rallied from off the pace to win a seven-furlong maiden race by three-quarters of a length under Jose Ortiz. He finished in 1:24.09 and earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure. Surprisingly, he was sent off at 29-1 and returned $60.50.
“I was pleased with the way he ran,” said Shug McGaughey, the trainer of Emancipation and Orb, who both are by Malibu Moon. “I told [Ortiz] in the paddock, ‘He’ll break well. He’s not fast, but he’ll come running.’ It took me a while to get there just because he was a slow learner. When he started coming around, he came around in a hurry mentally.”

McGaughey said Emancipation came out of the race in good order and likely will run in a first-level allowance and then perhaps a race like the Curlin Stakes at 1 1/8 mile at Saratoga on July 29.
“Obviously, he’ll run as far as you want him to run,” McGaughey said. “I think he’ll be better around two turns. We’ll see what we got when we get up the road.”
Fayeq, a 3-year-old brother to Rachel Alexandra, won a 1 1/16-mile maiden race by 2 3/4 lengths Sunday in his third start. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Fayeq had a clear outside run under Luis Saez. He finished in 1:43.95 and earned an 87 Beyer.
“He didn’t switch leads; he’s still very green,” said McLaughlin, who trains Fayeq for Shadwell Stable. “We think a lot of him. Stretching out helped.”
Fayeq also is by Malibu Moon.
McLaughlin said he will look for an allowance race next for Fayeq.
