Showalter runs on short rest in allowance
Showalter will make his second start of the year on two weeks’ rest in a first-level allowance at Laurel Park on Saturday.
Trained by Gary Capuano, Showalter couldn’t get by Delaware Park shipper Bill’s Passion in his comeback race and had to settle for second while well clear of the rest of the field. He will add blinkers for Saturday’s 5 1/2-furlong sprint. Showalter was a debut winner at Laurel last November.
There are also three maiden races for 2-year-olds on the card. Race 5 is at six furlongs on dirt, and races 1 and 7 are at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf.
In race 5, Hard Work will make his debut for Tony Dutrow. Hard Work, a $220,000 Keeneland yearling buy, is a half-brother by Broken Vow to the millionaire sprinter Clearly Now.
El Areeb, a $340,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. purchase in March, will be making his third start for Cal Lynch. He finished second in the slop in his most recent race.
In race 7, Union Blues will add blinkers and switch to turf for trainer Arnaud Delacour. Union Blues finished second in his debut and third last out. He is well spotted Saturday.
Race 1, for fillies, will rematch Tribal Transit and Stormin Babe, who both closed well in their debuts to finish second and third, separated by a head. Tribal Transit had an inside trip while Stormin Babe went outside of horses nearing the stretch,
La Parisienne comes into her first start off four bullet works at Fair Hill for Delacour.
