Shotgun Kowboy could be headed to New Mexico. The horse, who has finished second in three consecutive Grade 3 races since May, is being freshened and will be considered for the $175,000 Downs at Albuquerque Handicap on Aug. 6. Shotgun Kowboy last raced July 2 and was just edged in the Grade 3 Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows. Following the race, he was sent to the Oklahoma farm of his breeder, owner, and trainer, C.R. Trout.  “He’s just hanging out,” Trout said Friday. “I don’t have anything picked out for him. The only thing I’ve looked at is the race at Albuquerque. That might not be a bad place to go.” The Albuquerque Handicap will be run over 1 1/8 miles, the same distance as the Cornhusker. It’s also the distance over which Shotgun Kowboy registered his biggest win, scoring in last year’s Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park. Remington’s main race for older horses, the $175,000 Governor’s Cup at 1 1/8 miles, has been moved from its traditional mid-August spot on the calendar to Sept. 25. Shotgun Kowboy has won 6 of 14 starts and $744,444. Earlier this year, he ran second in both the Grade 3, $200,000 Texas Mile and the Grade 3, $200,000 Lone Star Park Handicap.
