Short Summer Dress fends off late challenge in IU Hoosier

Short Summer Dress became a stakes winner Wednesday, when she held off the late bid of Lady of Luxury by three-quarters of a length in the $65,000 IU Hoosier at Indiana Downs. It was another neck back in third to Carimba.
The IU Hoosier, which was for fillies and mares, shared a card with the $65,000 William Garrett for 3-year-olds and up. The stakes were both run over five furlongs on turf. The course was firm.
At the end of the card, Indiana Grand announced racing for Thursday has been canceled due to a forecast of extreme heat.
Short Summer Dress ($14.60) jumped out to the lead at the start and took the field through an opening quarter in 22.52 seconds and a half-mile in 45.41. She withstood a challenge from Tap N Sway at the top of the stretch, then another from Lady of Luxury in the later stages, before going on to cover the distance in 57.31.
Joseph D. Ramos was aboard Short Summer Dress for the rider’s first career stakes win, it was announced at Indiana Grand. Ramos won the first race of his career on March 28, 2019, according to Daily Racing Form statistics.
Short Summer Dress races for Speiss Stable and her trainer, Randy Klopp. She is a daughter of Munnings. Short Summer Dress has now won 4 of 15 starts and $124,510.
Charcoal also became a stakes winner Wednesday, when he swept past the leaders in the stretch for a 2 1/2-length victory over Mark of the Z in the William Garrett. It was another half-length back in third to Jazzy Times.
Charcoal ($9.20) settled in fourth as Jazzy Times set a pressured pace, taking the field through an opening quarter in 22.51 and a half-mile in 45.32. Charcoal picked up the tempo in the lane and went on to cover the distance in 57.10.
Deshawn Parker was aboard for breeder and owner Ron Dowdy and trainer Tracey Wisner.
Charcoal is a son of English Channel who has now won 6 of 19 starts for earnings of $131,304.
