Short, former jockey, dead at 46

Steve Andersen|Nov 20, 2002

Funeral services were held Monday in Post, Texas, for Mike Short, a former journeyman jockey in the Southwest who died as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident Saturday near Lubbock, Texas.

Short, 46, rode from 1980 to 2000, winning 801 races, primarily aboard Quarter Horses. His Quarter Horse mounts earned $3,069,449, according to the American Quarter Horse Association.

Among Short's leading mounts were Floyds Fortune, the winner of the 1995 La Chiripada Stakes at the Downs at Albuquerque and Saucy Native, a multiple stakes winner in New Mexico.

Following his retirement, Short remained involved in racing as an exercise rider.
