Shoemaker service Oct. 21

Brad Free|Oct 14, 2003

Memorial services for jockey Bill Shoemaker, who died Sunday at age 72, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Santa Anita. The service will be held at 4 p.m., and is open to the public. The ceremony will be held in the winner's circle, and the grandstand will be open.

In lieu of flowers, the Shoemaker family has asked that donations be made to the Shoemaker Foundation, the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund, or the Paralysis Project.

Shoemaker was the world's winningest rider when he retired from riding in 1990 after having won 8,833 races. He trained horses from 1990 until retiring in 1997. Shoemaker, whose win total was later exceeded by Laffit Pincay Jr., died in his sleep at home in San Marino, Calif.
