ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Grade 1 winner Shirl’s Speight is among the 18 nominated to the 27th running of the $1 million Woodbine Mile, one of three Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In events here Sept. 16.
Trained by Roger Attfield, Shirl’s Speight finished a troubled fourth in last year’s Mile before ending up second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland. The son of Speightstown has worked brilliantly since finishing fourth off a five-month layoff in the Grade 2 King Edward here Aug. 19.
Eclipse Award-wining New York trainer Chad Brown nominated seven, including the mare In Italian. The others are Activist Investing, Carl Spackler, Emaraaty, Program Trading, Speak of the Devil, and Whitebeam.
Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby took the 2022 Mile with the brilliant Modern Games. They nominated Master of the Seas, a son of Dubawi who’s coming off a four-length score in the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot.
Among the others nominated are Grade 1 Arlington Million victor Set Piece and King Edward winner War Bomber, who faded to ninth after pressing a fast pace in last year’s Mile.
The other two Breeders’ Cup qualifiers on Sept. 16 are the Grade 1 Summer for 2-year-olds and the Grade 1 Natalma for 2-year-olds fillies. Both one-mile turf events have 38 nominees and go for a purse of $500,000.
The Woodbine Mile, Summer, and Natalma are the only three non-Lasix races during the entire Woodbine meet.
