Ship and Win program returns for Del Mar

Del Mar will bring back its popular Ship and Win program for the 10th consecutive summer meet this year and has extended its tentacles to reward qualifying horses for the entire meeting, which begins July 10 and runs through Sept. 7.
All horses who ship in from out of state – with the exception of stakes runners or first-time starters – and have not raced in California for more than 12 months will receive an automatic check of $2,000 for their first start locally, plus a 20 percent bonus on purse monies earned for finishes from first through fifth place for all starts during the meet.

“We hope to lure new outfits to Del Mar with it, but we also strongly encourage our own owners and trainers to go out and get horses from outside California and bring them on board,” David Jerkens, Del Mar’s racing secretary, said in a press release Tuesday. “These horses add spice to our Del Mar fields and they invariably go on to add backbone to racing cards up and down the state.”
Nominations due for Futurity, Debutante
Nominations for Del Mar’s Grade 1 races for 2-year-olds, the Futurity and Debutante, are due June 12, the track announced.
The fee is $250.
The Futurity is closing day, Sept. 7, with the Debutante – restricted to fillies – on Sept. 6. Both races are at seven furlongs and have purses of $250,000.
