The standard for qualification was well-established when the filly Shiny New started as an odds-on favorite in the 12th and final time trial for the Ed Burke Million Futurity on May 25 at Los Alamitos. Shiny New needed to run 350 yards in a time faster than 17.88 seconds to qualify for Sunday’s $1,040,000 final. She did her job. Shiny New won by 2 1/2 lengths in 17.46 to remain unbeaten in two starts for owners M and G Farms and Steve Burns, who bred the filly. Trained by Valentin Zamudio, Shiny New will be favored to win the Ed Burke, the first of three seven-figure futurities at Los Alamitos this year. The Golden State Million will be run Oct. 26, while the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity is scheduled for Dec. 14. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Jockey Ruben Loxano has ridden Shiny New in her two starts and has the mount Sunday. Shiny New’s qualifying time was much quicker than her nine rivals on Sunday. Vyper won the 11th trial in 17.67 in what was briefly the fastest qualifying time but eventually ranked second. Vyper, a gelding, has won 2 of 3 starts. Other notable trial race winners were Accelerated, who was timed in 17.76, Jess Im Worth It, a two-length winner in 17.77; and Doodah Cartel, who was clocked in 17.79. Doodah Cartel, trained by Paul Jones, won the second trial on May 25, the only qualifier in the first half of the marathon program. Of the 10 finalists, eight started in the final four races, including Accelerated, Jess Im Worth It, and Vyper. Accelerated, purchased for $850,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale last October, races for Gamaliel Garza Garcia and trainer Juan Aleman. A colt, Accelerated is unbeaten in two starts, having won a 300-yard maiden race in his debut April 27. In the Burke trials, Accelerated closed with a rush to win by a head over the Burns-owned French Valley, who qualified for Sunday’s final. Cheat Sheet, who finished a nose behind French Valley, is part of Sunday’s field. While Accelerated was the most expensive hip at the Los Alamitos auction, Shiny New was bought for a mere $20,000 at the Heritage Place auction in Oklahoma City last fall. Shiny New is by the first-year stallion Mpshinning and is out of Quirky, the champion aged mare of 2015. “This filly has a ton of talent, and we are expecting some big things out of her,” Zamudio told Los Alamitos publicity on trial night. Burns stands Mpshinning at his Southern California farm. He also stands the nationally prominent stallion Favorite Cartel, who has seven runners in the Ed Burke. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
