ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Shifty goes for two sprint scores in a row on Sunday at Woodbine in the featured conditioned allowance with an $80,000 claiming option. As the main speed in the six-furlong contest, she should be odds-on under Rafael Hernandez. Shifty had a lucrative 2025 season under the guidance of trainer Mark Casse. After romping in a seven-furlong allowance in her season opener, she ran third at a short price in the seven-furlong Fury Stakes, after which she was favored in all three legs of the Canadian Triple Tiara for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies. Shifty finished second in both the 1 1/8-mile Woodbine Oaks and the 1 1/16-mile Bison City Stakes. She switched to the turf in the final Tiara race, the 1 1/16-mile Wonder Where, in which she weakened late to third after vying for the lead throughout most of the stretch on the inner course. Shifty was softened up in a speed duel when third in her season debut in a conditioned allowance at Gulfstream. She cut back from a route to 6 1/2 furlongs here April 25 and rode a speed bias in a decisive win while clearing the second allowance condition, earning a career-best 88 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Casse feels the jury’s still out on whether the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro is at her best when sprinting. “I have always thought she could run long, but she makes it tough on herself,” Casse said. “I want her to learn to settle, but drawing the one-hole doesn’t help with that.” Casse also entered Orderofthephoenix, who has been out of action since landing a July 3 conditioned allowance with a 77 Beyer July 3. The Irish-bred mare has worked steadily and figures to take up the chase in a stalking position under Emma-Jayne Wilson. Uphill Dance, Cara Cara, American Women, and Bourbon Memory complete the ninth-race field. Uphill Dance put up an 85 Beyer twice last year, winning a 6 1/2-furlong conditioned allowance and when a wide-closing fourth in the Grade 3 Bessarabian. The 5-year-old has been sidelined since finishing seventh in the Dec. 21 Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway. Her streaking trainer, Rachel Halden, saddled Ciunas to win off a six-month layoff last Sunday. Cara Cara is sent out by another hot conditioner, John Mattine, who began the meet by going 4 for 13. Cara Cara is coming off a well-beaten third behind last year’s Canadian champion female sprinter Little Teddy in her May 9 seasonal bow. American Women led all the way winning at the second allowance classification with an 89 Beyer two starts ago on the dirt at Gulfstream. She attended the pace on the outside before fading to fifth here most recently in the Grade 3 Whimsical on the Tapeta, over which she cleared the first allowance condition in November. Bourbon Memory has been in poor form since taking the Serena Song Stakes at her Turfway base in March of last year. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
