Sherman fined and suspended for medication violation
ARCADIA, Calif. – Art Sherman, who trained two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome, has been suspended 15 days and fined $1,500 after one of his starters at Los Alamitos last December tested positive for a metabolite of the prohibited medication pyrilamine, an antihistamine.

Sherman originally was given a 30-day suspension and $3,000 fine after the horse, Palm d’Oro, tested positive. Half of the penalties were stayed through a settlement agreement between Sherman and the California Horse Racing Board, provided Sherman does not have any violations for medications in Classes 1, 2, or 3 through March 28, 2022. Pyrilamine is a Class 3 medication.
The terms of the suspension were published in a ruling by Santa Anita stewards Ron Church, Luis Jauregui, and Kim Sawyer on Sunday.
Palm d’Oro won the first race on Dec. 20, a $20,000 claimer. The purse was ordered redistributed on March 12.
Sherman’s suspension began Monday and continues through April 12. During the term of the suspension, Sherman, 84, cannot attend races or be present in the stable area.
