Sheriff Brown rallies from last to take Sunland Park Handicap

Sheriff Brown closed from last to win the $100,000 Sunland Park Handicap by a 1 1/2 lengths over Zestful on Saturday.
It was another length back in third to Convention, who finished a nose in front of favorite and fourth-place finisher Mine That Star.
Sheriff Brown ($12.60) trailed as Mine That Star took the field through an opening half-mile in 44.98 seconds. Zestful took over through a punishing six furlongs in 1:08.91. Sheriff Brown closed through the stretch to cover the 1 1/8 miles on a fast track in 1:49.37.
Luis Negron was aboard the winner for trainer Todd Fincher.
Sheriff Brown was winning his second stakes. He has now won 7 of 25 starts for earnings of $375,811. He is a son of Curlin who races for Peacock Family Holdings.
Sheriff Brown is out of the mare Rose’s Desert, who also has produced the stakes winners Senor Buscador, Our Iris Rose and Runaway Ghost.
