Sheer Drama Stakes tops Rainbow 6 mandatory-payout card

Randy Goulding|Sep 09, 2021
Sound Machine wins the 2021 Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream Park
Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos Musical Romance winner Sound Machine will likely be singled on many Rainbow 6 tickets in race 11, the Sheer Drama Stakes.

If Sound Machine runs as well as when she finished third in the Grade 2 Princess Rooney on July 3, she will be tough to beat in the $75,000 Sheer Drama on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The Sheer Drama is part of a Rainbow 6 that has a mandatory payout Saturday. The carryover should be close to $1 million.

The seven-furlong Sheer Drama is for Florida-bred fillies and mares and drew eight horses. It goes as race 11 on a 12-race card that begins at 12:20 p.m. Eastern.

Prior to Sound Machine’s third place-finish in the Princess Rooney, she won the $75,000 Musical Romance for Florida-bred fillies and mares on May 29.

The 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr.

“She’s very good right now,” said Joseph, Gulfstream’s leading trainer. “She ran hard in the Princess Rooney, so we gave her a rest and pointed her to this race. If she runs like we expect, we will look for a Grade 3 for her next start.”

Sound Machine, who will break from post 5 with Edgard Zayas riding, will be a single on many Rainbow 6 tickets. Here is a quick look at the other races:

Race 7: Maria’s Revenge looks like the one to beat in a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares going a mile on turf. Trained by Murat Sancal, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Tonalist rallied to finish third at the same level and distance Aug. 6, and should have speed to run at.

Free Data, Ventriloquest, and Love My Job also look live.

Race 8: Call Bros and Treasure Run will try to repeat while taking the logical step up after winning a $12,500 claimer for 3-year-olds or nonwinners of two.

Break Beat is the winner if he runs as well as he did earlier this year. However, he comes into this off double-digit losses in his last two races.

Race 9: R Big G and Spuntacular might be enough in this maiden special weight race for Florida-bred 2-year-olds. R Big G is by The Big Beast – an excellent debut sire – and is trained by Georgina Baxter, who won with three of her last five first-time starting 2-year-olds.

Spuntacular ran well in both of his starts and is coming off a third-place finish in a maiden special weight race for Florida-breds that produced three next-out winners.

Race 10: Captain Ron is clearly the one to beat in this first-level allowance race for 3-year-olds and up going five furlongs on turf. Trained by Rohan Crichton, Captain Ron is coming off a win at the same level April 30 and is capable of firing fresh. He is not eligible for the allowance conditions and is taking advantage of the $25,000 claiming option.

Discreet Time and The Virginian also are possibilities.

Race 11: If not Sound Machine, then Sonar.

Race 12: Captain Fish owns the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure and is the only three-time winner in this $20,000 claimer for 3-year-olds or 4-year-olds and up nonwinners of two.

Montana Man had been off for more than a year when he finished fourth at this level Aug. 15. He has worked well in the interim and could take a big step forward with a race behind him.
