Shedaresthedevil in Callaghan barn, targets Sorrento Stakes

DEL MAR, Calif. – Shedaresthedevil, winner of a maiden special weight race June 13 at Churchill Downs, was recently transferred to trainer Simon Callaghan in California and will have her stakes debut in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs on Aug. 3 at Del Mar.
Shedaresthedevil was bought by Qatar Racing, Callaghan said. Shedaresthedevil won at 5 1/2 furlongs in her debut, closing from fourth in a field of eight to win by 3 1/4 lengths. She was trained by Norm Casse for Glencrest Farm.
“We’ve been working with her, and she’s got a good mind,” Callaghan said. “Down the road, she’ll go farther. I think she’ll come into her own when we go seven-eighths and a mile.”
Callaghan plans to have two runners in the $200,000 Sorrento Stakes, including Amalfi Sunrise, winner of a maiden special weight race at 4 1/2 furlongs on June 23 at Santa Anita. Amalfi Sunrise disputed the pace and won by 6 1/4 lengths, earning an 88 Beyer Speed Figure.
“They have different running styles,” Callaghan said of the two fillies. “Amalfi Sunrise will be forwardly placed.”
The Sorrento Stakes is a key prep for the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Aug. 31, a race Callaghan has won the last two years with Moonshine Memories and Bellafina.
Comical, winner of the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga July 11, is under consideration for the Sorrento, but could skip the race for the Debutante, trainer Doug O’Neill said.
“We’ve got that race circled on the calendar,” O’Neill said of the Debutante.
O’Neill said Comical is scheduled to have a workout Saturday.
