Barbara D. Livingston Pacific Heat was diagnosed with a throat ulcer following the Starlet Stakes on Dec. 12.

She Has Charm, an unraced 2-year-old filly by Smart Strike, has shown trainer Peter Eurton enough promise in recent training for him to be enthusiastic about her prospects for 2016. What is less certain is how she will perform in her career debut in Saturday’s fourth race at Los Alamitos, a maiden special weight contest at six furlongs for 2-year-old fillies.

“She has some talent,” Eurton said. “We want to get a race into her.”

Owned by Lee and Susan Searing, She Has Charm was purchased for $360,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale. She has worked quickly at times in recent weeks, including five furlongs in 58.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Dec. 5.

She Has Charm might be more effective around two turns, Eurton said. He is concerned that She Has Charm might not be effective at Los Alamitos if she trails the leaders by more than a few lengths early in the track’s quarter-mile stretch.

“It seems if they’re not up within a length or two, it’s hard to make up ground,” he said. “She’s trained very well. I think she has average speed.”

She Has Charm is part of an intriguing field of 10 that has runners from several leading stables. John Sadler starts Perfect Drama, a filly by Big Drama purchased at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March sale of 2-year-olds in training for $270,000. Trainer Bob Baffert has two hopes – Bourbon and Ginger, a $300,000 yearling purchase, and Beauty N Balance, who is out of multiple stakes winner Tough Tiz’s Sis.

◗ Pacific Heat, who finished eighth as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos on Dec. 12, was diagnosed with a throat ulcer following the race, Eurton said.

Eurton said that Pacific Heat is being treated several times a day and is being tack-walked at his Santa Anita stable. Pacific Heat was beaten for the first time in her third start in the Starlet Stakes. She won the Golden State Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar in late October in her stakes debut.

Pacific Heat will be pointed for stakes during the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, Eurton said.
