She Goes Up tries for rare double in Governor's Cup Derby
She Goes Up can become the first horse in 24 years to sweep the Governor’s Cup Futurity and Governor’s Cup Derby in consecutive seasons when she starts in Sunday’s $175,000 Governor’s Cup Derby at Los Alamitos.
She Goes Up would join elite company if she manages to win the 400-yard race.
In the 1990s, the brilliant Corona Chick won both races in 1991 and 1992 followed by her daughter Corona Cash in 1997-98. Corona Cash also won the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in 1997, the year she was named champion 2-year-old filly and overall champion 2-year-old.

Corona Cash was the champion 3-year-old filly of 1998. Corona Chick won the same 2-year-old titles as Corona Cash in 1991 and the 3-year-old filly title in 1992.
She Goes Up will need to accomplish much more than a win in the Governor’s Cup Derby to be considered for a championship this year, but the filly is in the midst of a successful season. She Goes Up won the La Pacifica Handicap at 350 yards on May 7 and set the fastest qualifying time for the Governor’s Cup Derby in trials on July 10.
Trained by Scott Willoughby for owner and breeder Ed Allred, She Goes Up drew the inside post in a field of 10 in the Governor’s Cup and is drawn alongside Sweet Dasha Fire, who was third in the La Pacifica and second to She Goes Up in the July 10 trial.
She Goes Up won the first of two trials for the Governor’s Cup Derby in 19.81 seconds. Favorite Honey won the second division in 20.00 seconds. Last fall, Favorite Honey won the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeders’ Futurity for trainer Monty Arrossa.
Favorite Honey breaks from post 4 in the Governor’s Cup Derby.

The Governor’s Cup Derby is the last of 10 races on a program that includes four stakes. The sequence covers the $1 late pick four and begins with the $25,000 Debutante Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 350 yards followed by the $100,000 Spencer Childers Championship for older horses at 400 yards.
Monopolist and Up And Atem, owned and bred by Allred, are drawn in posts 7 and 8 in a field of nine in the Childers. They were second and third behind the nationally prominent gelding Empressum in the Vessels Maturity on July 3.
The ninth race is the $40,000 Matron Stakes led by Kiss Thru Fire, the champion aged mare of 2021.
