She Goes Up notches upset in Governor’s Cup Futurity
CYPRESS, Calif. - She Goes Up, a filly whose only previous win occurred in a 220-yard maiden race in April, recorded an upset victory in her second start in a stakes in Saturday’s $310,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos.
She Goes Up races for owner and breeder Ed Allred, who owns Los Alamitos, and trainer Scott Willoughby. Allred swept the exacta in the Governor’s Cup Futurity, with a second by the gelding Watch Out at 19-1.
In the preceding race, Allred and Willoughby swept the first three positions in the $100,000 Spencer Childers California Breeders’ Championship with Circle City, Nomadic and Chocolatito, all major stakes winners in the last year.
She Goes Up, who was ridden by Jonathan Roman, paid $58 as the longest price in a field of eight. Starting from the inside post, She Goes Up was away well and led narrowly over even-money favorite Fire Fast Honey after the first 100 yards. Fire Fast Honey faded from contention, leaving She Goes Up in front of Watch Out midway through the race.
She Goes Up won by three-quarters of a length over Watch Out, finishing 350 yards in 17.67 seconds. Watch Out, trained by James Glenn Jr., finished a neck in front of 6-1 Favorite Honey.
Fire Fast Honey finished fifth, beaten two lengths. Favorite Honey, a gelding, and Fire Fast Honey, a filly, are half-siblings out of Coronas Fast Honey. Leading Quarter Horse mares often have multiple foals in the same year through embryo transfer breeding.
She Goes Up, by Separate Interest, has won 2 of 6 starts and has earned $137,095. She was third in the Fred Scane Handicap at 350 yards on June 19 in her stakes debut.
Circle City won the Childers Championship by three-quarters of a length, paying $5 as the favorite. Ridden by Jesus Ayala, Circle City broke from the inside in a field of seven and led throughout, running 400 yards in 19.65 seconds.
Nomadic (3-1) closed well toward the outside of the field to finish second in his first start since a win in the Southern California Derby last December. Chocolatito (5-2) was third by 1 1/4 lengths in his first start since a sixth in a division of the Brad McKinzie Winter Championship trials on Jan. 24.
Chocolatito won the Vessels Maturity and Los Alamitos Championship in 2020.
Circle City and Nomadic are 4-year-old full brothers – by Favorite Cartel out of Moonlight Corona.
Circle City won the Vessels Maturity on July 3, the top race of the summer for older horses. A gelding, Circle City has won 8 of 19 starts and has earned $422,081.
