Sharp Dressed Beau clearly best in Western Canada Handicap
Sharp Dressed Beau had a perfect trip in winning the $50,000 Western Canada Handicap at Century Mile on Sunday. He paid $10.70 for his two-length victory over Call It a Wrap in the six-furlong dash for 3-year-olds.
The Oregon-bred son of Car Talk broke alertly from post two with Rigo Sarmiento aboard, tucked behind Coco Tiger who posted quick interior fractions of 21.44 and 44.46 seconds. When Coco Tiger drifted out at the top of the stretch Sharp Dressed Beau pounced, opened up a clear lead, and was under wraps while easily holding off the strong late run by Call It a Wrap. Coco Tiger held on for third.
The final time was 1:10.06.
Sharp Dressed Beau was coming off a front-running victory in a first-level allowance race at Century Mile on May 18. He races for Empire Equestrian and is trained by Rick Hedge.
“We always thought he could sit behind horses,” said Hedge. “He broke very good and I kept saying 'Tuck back,' and he did. It was a nice ride.”
Earlier, heavily favored Im Evin Im Leavin came from a stalking position in her decisive 3 1/2-length win over Exactly in the $50,000 Chariot Chaser for 3-year-old fillies.
The Greg Tracy-trained daughter of Can the Man paid $3.
A decent 2-year-old, she has been nothing less than impressive in three straight wins this season.
Bred in Kentucky, Im Evin Im Leavin races for Wayne Bakke, Nathan Hoines, and Jodee Hoovestal.
