Shared Belief works five furlongs in prep for San Antonio
Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 on Tuesday at Golden Gate Fields, moving closer to a highly anticipated showdown with California Chrome in the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes on Feb. 7.
Trained by Hollendorfer, Shared Belief worked in company and had the fastest of nine works at the distance.
“He was working behind horses and caught them at the wire,” Hollendorfer said. “He’s staying very well. We’re optimistic that he’ll stay the same.”
Shared Belief, who won the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes over seven furlongs Dec. 26 at Santa Anita, will train at Golden Gate Fields until a few days before the San Antonio, when he will be sent to Hollendorfer’s Santa Anita stable.
Bayern, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November, is not a definite starter for the San Antonio. He was diagnosed with a quarter crack last weekend and missed a scheduled workout.
** On Tuesday at Santa Anita, Bolo, the winner of the Eddie Logan Stakes for 2-year-olds on turf Dec. 27, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds. Trained by Carla Gaines, Bolo is being considered for the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-olds over 1 1/16 miles on dirt Feb. 7.
** Big Macher, a winner of four stakes, most recently the Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar in November, worked five furlongs in 1:00 on Tuesday. A 5-year-old gelding, Big Macher is likely to run Jan. 24 in the $150,000 California Cup Sprint Handicap.
