Shared Belief puts in work for San Antonio

ARCADIA, Calif. – Shared Belief, the winner of the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26, worked six furlongs in 1:13.20 at Golden Gate Fields on Wednesday, moving closer to a start in the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes on Feb. 7 at Santa Anita Park.
The San Antonio Stakes will be a showdown between Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, and California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male. Bayern, the Breeders' Cup Classic winner, is a possible for the race.
On Wednesday, Shared Belief worked in company with two stablemates, starting in the rear of the group, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said.
“He went by them in the stretch,” Hollendorfer said. “It was a very good workout.”
Shared Belief has been based at Golden Gate Fields and has exercised on that track’s Tapeta Footings synthetic surface for most of his career. Hollendorfer said Shared Belief will have two additional workouts at Golden Gate Fields before being sent to Southern California in the days before the San Antonio.
Owned by a partnership that includes television sports commentator Jim Rome, Shared Belief has won 8 of 9 starts and earned $2,032,200. His only loss was a fourth-place finish after a troubled trip in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita last November.
◗ Dortmund, the unbeaten winner of the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 20, worked seven furlongs in 1:23.40 on Wednesday. Trained by Bob Baffert, Dortmund is a candidate for the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Feb. 7.
