Shanghai Tariff lost the local prep but won the $100,000 Saylorville on Saturday night at Prairie Meadows.

Breaking from the rail May 23 in the Prairie Rose Stakes, Shanghai Tariff dueled and was caught late by Lake Ponchatrain, but that second-place finish set her up for her first stakes win. Shanghai Tariff had the rail post again Saturday night, but jockey Alex Canchari patiently doled out her early speed, letting Adventurous Lady set the opening quarter-mile split of 22.15 seconds. Canchari never allowed Adventurous Lady to cross to the fence, letting his mount run up to the lead before the far turn, and from there the race was over. Shanghai Tariff was clear through a half-mile in 45.04 and coasted to the finish a 2 1/2-length winner over Shabang Baby.

Pretty Greeley finished third while Maybe Wicked, favored by a few dollars over Lake Ponchatrain, finished fifth. Lake Ponchatrain trailed from the start, became rough-strided around the far turn, and was eased out of the race in upper stretch by Terry Thompson, who dismounted as Lake Ponchatrain was vanned off the course.

Shanghai Tariff was timed in 1:09.83 for six furlongs on a fast track and paid $11.20 to win. The 4-year-old filly by Shanghai Bobby out of Star White, by Naevus, has been brought patiently along for Doubledown Stables by trainer Jim DiVito, who let his filly run through three allowance conditions before moving her into stakes competition this spring at Oaklawn. Shanghai Tariff had two seconds and a third in three stakes starts before her breakthrough Saturday night.

► Mywomanfromtokyo made her 2-5 odds look like a fair price with an 8 1/2-length win in the $65,000 Hawkeyes Stakes for older Iowa-bred fillies and mares. Mywomanfromtokyo had finished second in the 2018 renewal of the Hawkeyes after winning in 2016 and 2017, and she led from the start in Saturday night’s race, paying $2.80 while running 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.13. Kelly Von Hemel trains Mywomanfromtokyo for Crimson King Farm and Christine Rhiner, and Glenn Corbett rode her. Mywomanfromtokyo is a 6-year-old by Neko Bay out of Plumlake Lady, by Carson City.
