The last time Shakers No Secret raced at Los Alamitos, he finished third behind Empressum and Jess Good Wine in the $600,000 Champion of Champions last December. Those rivals are not part of Sunday’s $134,700 Vessels Maturity, a race in which Shakers No Secret is expected to be favored. Empressum, one of Quarter Horse racing’s leading older horses in recent years, has yet to start this year. Jess Good Wine is on the New Mexico steward’s list, and therefore ineligible to race, after testing positive for a banned medication following a win in the $250,000 All American Gold Cup at the Downs at Albuquerque last September. Even without those runners present, Shakers No Secret starts against a field of distinguished rivals in the Vessels Maturity at 400 yards, one of the track’s leading races for older horses. The Vessels Maturity drew a field of eight, notably Stanley Cartel, the winner of the $157,400 Southern California Derby last December; and London Toby, who was second by a nose to Unrelentless in the $135,750 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship in February. Stanley Cartel was trained in 2024 by Monty Arrossa, who is currently banned from racing at Los Alamitos after his stable had positive tests for illicit medications in major futurities and time trials last fall. Arrossa’s assistant Ramiro Castillo took over training for the barn, and Stanley Cartel was second by a half-length for Castillo in the Kaweah Bar Handicap at 350 yards on April 26. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! London Toby, trained by Scott Willoughby for Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred, has started once since the Winter Championship, winning a 350-yard allowance race on June 15. Shakers No Secret is trained by Marc Jungers, who also starts Relentless Eagle, the winner of the $328,811 Texas Classic Derby at Lone Star Park last November. Relentless Eagle was fifth behind London Toby on June 15. Since the Champion of Champions, Shakers No Secret has started three times. He won the $350,000 Championship at 440 yards at Sunland Park in February and was second in two leading stakes at Remington Park, losing the $108,000 Leo Stakes at 400 yards by a half-length on May 3 and the $250,000 Debbie Schauf Remington Park Championship at 440 yards by three-quarters of a length on May 31. Owned by the Texas-based partnership of Manny Dutchover and Abel and Ethan Lopez, Shakers No Secret has won 10 of 31 starts and earned $738,664. Jungers said earlier this year that the goals with Shakers No Secret are starting in the Champion of Champions in December and getting the 5-year-old gelding past $1 million in earnings. A win in the Vessels Maturity will help to achieve both of those objectives. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
