The Kentucky stallion division of Shadwell Farm, which has made major cuts to its U.S. landholdings in the years following the death of its founder, is now for sale. Last Thursday, Bluegrass Sotheby’s International Realty officially listed the 538-acre property for $20 million. Shadwell no longer stands stallions in Kentucky, with a number of older members of its roster pensioned to Old Friends and younger stallions moved to regional marketplaces in recent years. Shadwell was founded by the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who died in 2021. Since then, although Shadwell continues to breed and race, the operation has become much smaller. Shadwell stands five stallions, including European Horse of the Year Baaeed, in Newmarket, England. Shadwell does still maintain a U.S. broodmare band – including Eclipse Award champion Malathaat – and is involved in bloodstock and racing operations in North America, with Sheikha Hissa, Sheikh Hamdan’s daughter, attending the Keeneland September yearling sale to make purchases. Shadwell had 93 starts in North America in 2025, according to Equibase, down from 229 in 2015. Much of Shadwell’s U.S. land has become available in recent years, with other major players snapping it up. Its former Shadayid Stud, an 839-acre property in Kentucky, was purchased by John Stewart of Resolute Racing in 2023 to serve as the base of his growing operation. In late February, Coolmore acquired 1,100 acres from Shadwell in a near-$50 million transaction. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
