Sha Tin: Highland Fortune looking for first win of season in Fenwick Handicap

Steve Andersen|Nov 05, 2020

The Kentucky-bred gelding Highland Fortune has made his mark as a successful sprinter in Ireland and Hong Kong in recent years.

In 2018, Highland Fortune was second in the El Gran Senor Stakes at Tipperary Racecourse in Ireland. Sent to Hong Kong in late 2018, Highland Fortune has won 2 of 11 starts on that circuit with both wins at Happy Valley Racecourse in June.

Sunday, Highland Fortune starts at Happy Valley in the $283,761 Fenwick Handicap at six furlongs in his second start of the Hong Kong season that began in September. By Declaration of War, Highland Fortune was fourth by two lengths in a six-furlong handicap at Happy Valley on Oct. 7 in his first start since mid-July.

Trained by Francis Liu, Highland Fortune will be ridden by Zac Purton, who was aboard for the June wins and the recent comeback.

Highland Fortune is part of a full field of 12 in the Fenwick Handicap, the last race on a 10-race program that begins at midnight Eastern on Sunday, or 9 p.m. Pacific on Saturday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

The field includes All in Mind and Good Luck Friend, who are starting at Happy Valley for the first time.

All in Mind won a seven-furlong handicap at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong last March, but is winless in his last four races. Trained by Tony Cruz, All in Mind has not raced since he finished second by a neck in a six-furlong handicap at Sha Tin on July 5.

All In Mind and Good Luck Friend tend to race as stalkers. Good Luck Friend, trained by Ricky Yiu, won consecutive starts in six-furlong handicaps at Sha Tin in June and July. Good Luck Friend has been close in two starts in six-furlong handicaps in the current season in Hong Kong, finishing third by 1 1/2 lengths on Sept. 27 and second by a neck on Oct. 11.

This is the only daytime program at Happy Valley in the Hong Kong season, which runs from September to mid-July. Happy Valley primarily runs mid-week evening programs, often on Wednesdays.
