Several jockeys to start suspensions

A plethora of jockeys will be serving days at the start of the Belmont fall meeting.
Irad Ortiz Jr., the leading rider in the country in wins and purse money won, will start a five-day suspension Friday for an infraction that occurred in the sixth race on July 5 at Belmont. Ortiz was aboard Bacchanalia, who finished fourth but interfered with fifth-place finisher Madame Orbe. Though there was a stewards’ inquiry into the incident, the order of finish was not changed.
Ortiz will be eligible to return Sept. 13.
Kendrick Carmouche will serve a three-day suspension for careless riding during the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes when his mount, Tomato Bill, came in on Raging Whiskey. The two finished second and third in the race. There was an objection and inquiry, but no change in the order of finish.
Carmouche will serve his days on Friday, Sunday, and next Wednesday. He has been granted permission to ride two stakes at Kentucky Downs on Saturday.
Ricardo Santana Jr. will serve a three-day careless riding suspension starting Sunday for causing interference and being disqualified from first on Indian Cross in the third race on Aug. 21 at Saratoga.
Luis Saez will serve a five-day suspension Sept.9-13 for careless riding dating back to the fourth race last Nov. 30 at Aqueduct.
Jose Ortiz was suspended three days for a causing interference during the running of the seventh race on Aug. 28 at Saratoga. His mount, Hai Bobbi, was disqualified from fourth to fifth. Ortiz has appealed those days.
Ortiz will be riding at Kentucky Downs this weekend and will not be at Belmont until next week.
