Seven Trumpets gets first stakes win in Good Lord

Seven Trumpets made a triumphant return to action Sunday when getting a terrific trip under Channing Hill in winning the $75,750 Good Lord Stakes at Ellis Park in western Kentucky.
Trained by Dale Romans for West Point Thoroughbreds, Seven Trumpets was making his first start since finishing last in the Grade 1 Malibu in late December. Always in a good spot when stalking Done Deal into defeat, the 4-year-old Morning Line colt spurted clear in deep stretch before finishing three-quarters of a length clear of a belated run from Guest Suite, at 17-1 the longest shot in a field of seven older horses.
Seven Trumpets paid $5.20 as the favorite after finishing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.59 over a fast track.
“We were excited to have him back,” said Romans. “He ran big. Now we’ve got plenty of options ahead.”
Seven Trumpets had finished second or third in four stakes last year at 3, including a runner-up finish behind his Romans stablemate Promises Fulfilled in the Grade 1 Allen Jerkens in August. He now has won four of 14 overall starts, with this being his first stakes victory.
A nine-race Sunday program was run following cancellations of the Friday and Saturday cards due to oppressive heat. One makeup date has been set for July 29, and a second is likely to be scheduled for a Monday in August.
