From her first workout in early March, the 2-year-old Quarter Horse filly Contentious has been a source of hype at Los Alamitos. So far, the attention has been warranted. Unbeaten in two starts, Contentious is the fastest qualifier for Sunday’s $254,400 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity at 300 yards and is expected to be favored in a field of 10. Contentious has to beat six of her stablemates in the track’s first stakes of the year for juveniles. Trainer Jose Flores won five of the seven time trials on April 19 and has seven of the qualifiers. He had eight starters in the seven trial races. Aside from Contentious, Flores starts trial race winners Cyber Eyes, Jaque, My Favorite Paris, and Call Me Candela, as well as Bridgewater and Romoland, who were second in their trials. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Monday Dynasty, a gelding trained by James Gonzales II, and Teller Looks Mrl, a colt trained by Jaime Gomez, are the other qualifiers. They finished first and second in the same trial. Gomez has won the Kindergarten a record eight times, but a win by Teller Looks Mrl would be an upset. Teller Looks Mrl and Romoland have started twice and are still maidens. Contentious, owned by Manuel Chavez and Jose Santos, has a top-level pedigree. She is by leading stallion Favorite Cartel and out of Quirky, the champion aged mare of 2015. Contentious was listed as not sold for $60,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale last October. In trials for the Kindergarten, Contentious was timed in 15.67 seconds, finishing a half-length in front of Bridgewater, who recorded the second-fastest qualifying time of 15.72 seconds. Flores said on trial night that all of his runners will need fortunate trips on Sunday to win. “These fillies are smart,” he told Los Alamitos publicity. “The Kindergarten is not always won by the fastest. It’s won by the smartest.” Contentious is one of four runners in the field unbeaten after two starts. The others are Cyber Eyes, Jaque, and Monday Dynasty. Cyber Eyes, who starts from the inside post, overcame a slow start to win a time trial in 15.786 for the sixth-fastest qualifying time. Jaque won a trial by 1 1/4 lengths in 15.79 seconds after she was unsettled in the gate moments before the start. Jaque starts from post 6. Monday Dynasty starts from the outside post and is capable of beating the Flores team. Monday Dynasty has been an odds-on favorite in both of his starts. He was timed in 15.789 seconds, the seventh-fastest qualifying time. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
