Seven-figure colt makes debut Saturday
DEL MAR, Calif. – Iron Fist, purchased for $1.55 million at the Keeneland September yearling sale last year, will make his career debut in Saturday’s first race for 2-year-old maidens over five furlongs.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer described the gray colt by Tapit as a prospect capable of living up to his purchase price. Iron Fist races for Regis Farms and Stonestreet Stable.
“Everything has been good,” Hollendorfer said. “He should be ready to go five furlongs.”
Trainer Peter Miller starts Calculator, a colt by In Summation purchased for $132,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s sale of 2-year-olds in training in April.
“He’s done everything we’ve asked of him,” Miller said. “He looks like a horse that should run well first time out. He’s got a lot of class to him.”
The fifth race Saturday also is for 2-year-old maidens over five furlongs. Miller runs Bold Bid, who was last of eight in a five-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita on June 20. He was found to have breathing and foot problems, the trainer said.
“He’s come back to work well,” Miller said. “It looks like he’s in the far easier of the split.”
Bob Baffert has prominent runners in both 2-year-old maiden races. In the first race, he runs Lord Nelson, a Pulpit colt purchased for $340,000 at Keeneland last September. In the fifth race, he starts Bollywood, a Bernardini colt bought for $700,000 in Ocala in April.
