Set for It ready for first stakes win in Tolltac
Set for It lost all chance in the $310,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos on July 31 when he was bumped by rivals on both sides at the start of the 350-yard race.
The Governor’s Cup Futurity was Set for It’s stakes debut. The gelding was the 3-1 second choice in a field of eight, and finished sixth beaten 2 1/2 lengths.
Saturday evening at Los Alamitos, Set for It could easily be favored to win his first stakes in the $20,000 Tolltac Handicap for 2-year-olds at 350 yards.
Trained by Valentin Zamudio, Set for It has won 2 of 4 starts for owners Jesus Cuevas and Jesus Avila. Set for It was purchased for $28,500 as a yearling at Los Alamitos last October.
The Tolltac Handicap is the last of 10 races and drew a field of eight. Set for It’s main competition are Vamoosing and Cactus Jack, who were first and second separated by a nose in a division of the California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes at 350 yards on Aug. 1.
Vamoosing, trained by James Glenn Jr., has won two consecutive races, a streak that began with a win in a maiden special weight race at 300 yards on June 27 in his fourth start.
Even though the Tolltac is listed as a handicap, all runners are carrying 124 pounds.
The Saturday program includes two time trials for the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeders’ Derby at 400 yards, which has a final on Oct. 2. There are 13 horses in the trials vying for 10 positions in the final.
The first division, which has a field of six, is the strongest. Monopolist, second in the Governor’s Cup Derby at 400 yards on Aug. 1, and College Scandal, third in the Golden State Derby on Aug. 15, lead the runners.
The second division is led by BF Outfoosed, who was fourth in the Governor’s Cup Futurity. BF Outfoosed was third in the El Primero Del Ano Derby in March and faces six rivals Saturday.
