Serengeti Empress will try two turns in Pocahontas

Serengeti Empress, a 13 1/2-length winner of the Ellis Debutante last month for trainer Tom Amoss, will make her first start around two turns Saturday in the Grade 2 Pocahontas at her home base, Churchill Downs.
“We’ve really been working with her on making the transition from one turn to two,” Amoss said.
The 11-day September meet at Churchill opens Friday and runs through Sept. 30. Entries for opening day are taken Tuesday, with the Saturday card being drawn Wednesday.
The Pocahontas and the Grade 3 Iroquois, both set for 1 1/16 miles, are Win and You’re In events toward the Nov. 2-3 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill, as well as the first qualifying-points races toward the 2019 Kentucky Derby (Iroquois) and Oaks (Pocahontas). They’re among four stakes set for Saturday at Churchill, along with the Locust Grove and Open Mind.
