Serendip pulls upset in Prairie Meadows Handicap
ALTOONA, Iowa - Serendip, making his stakes debut, sustained a five-wide bid from last place under Ricardo Santana Jr. and reeled in fellow longshot Doctor Peter to win Saturday night's $75,000 Prairie Meadows Handicap by a half-length.
Trained by Ron Moquett, Serendip returned $21.20 in the field of five 3-year-olds and up.
Fordubai set honest fractions of 23.62, 46.92 and 1:11.61 in the 1 1/16-mile race, fended off the heavily favored Grand Contender, and turned for home in front. Doctor Peter's rally was hampered when Fordubai came out and made contact with him approaching the furlong marker.
A 4-year-old Ghostzapper colt, Serendip covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.17. He earned$45,000 for owners H and W Stables LLC.
Serendip joins Rasmussen Memorial winner Right to Vote as stakes winners this meet for the Moquett stable.
