September Secret takes Golden State Juvenile Fillies in blanket finish

September Secret recorded a 13-1 upset in Friday’s $151,500 Golden State Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar thanks to a determined ride from jockey Ricardo Gonzalez.
September Secret seemed to be in a poor position with a furlong remaining. She was racing on the inside, behind a line of three fillies who appeared to have a winning advantage.
Gonzalez was able to move September Secret to the outside in the final sixteenth and run past those rivals to score a head victory over Dylans Wild Cat in the seven-furlong race for 2-year-old statebreds.
“Turning for home, I had a lot of horse and nowhere to go. I was looking for a spot to go,” Gonzalez said. “I finally got to the outside, and she got to the wire first, thankfully.”
September Secret ($28.60) ran seven furlongs in 1:25.56 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 62.

It took judges several minutes to sort the first four finishers. Dylans Wild Cat (15-1) finished a nose in front of 5-2 Eddie’s New Dream who was a nose in front of the previously unbeaten Governor Goteven in a field of nine.
Governor Goteven, the 3-2 favorite in Friday’s race, won two stakes for statebred fillies at the Del Mar summer meeting – the CTBA Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 1 and the Generous Portion Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 30.
September Secret, owned by Tom Kagele and Ken Shaw and trained by Peter Miller, was the only starter in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies with experience in a graded stakes, and the only filly who had raced for a claiming price.
By Grazen, September Secret won a $50,000 claimer for maiden California-breds on July 24 at Del Mar in her second start and was fifth of six in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 7 at Del Mar. September Secret won a starter allowance at six furlongs on Oct. 17 at Santa Anita in a prep for Friday’s race.
