Senex upset winner in Milano

Alan Shuback|Jun 21, 2004

The unheralded German invader Senex scored a 17-1 upset in the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano at San Siro in Milan on Sunday.

Trained by Hans Blume, the 4-year-old son of Pelder came from last to first in a field of seven to take the $593,000 contest by 2 1/2 lengths from the 10-1 Maktub. The Great Gatsby, trained by John Gosden to be second in last year's Epsom Derby but unraced since finishing fifth in the Irish Derby on June 29, was another length behind in third. The 8-5 choice Altieri was only fourth in his first try at a mile and a half.

Recent Italian Derby winner Groom Tesse showed nothing in finishing last of seven. Senex, who was winning for the first time since taking a Cologne allowance fourteen months ago, was timed in 2:28.70 on good ground.
