Send for Me shipping south after winning debut
The 2-year-old filly Send for Me, a seven-length winner of her debut going six furlongs Saturday at Aqueduct, will be heading south for the winter, trainer Jonathan Thomas said Sunday.
He did not have any immediate plans for the daughter of Into Mischief, though he does plan on stretching the filly out in distance over the course of the winter.
On Saturday, she ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:19.29 and earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure.
“This filly trained very professionally with a lot of class,” Thomas said Sunday. “We expected a good showing from her, we weren’t expecting quite that.”
Thomas was a little concerned that the 6 1/2 furlongs might be too short for Send for Me, and was pleasantly surprised with how much early speed she displayed.
“I like that she showed enough speed where we can incrementally stretch her out as opposed to having to run her as far as they write them,” said Thomas, whose primary winter base will be at the Payson Park training center in South Florida. “I can consider different options, but I don’t think you’ll see her running six or 6 1/2 [furlongs] again.”
Thomas said he would likely look for a race at seven furlongs or a mile for Send for Me’s next start. One potential option is the $100,000 Cash Run Stakes going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Park on New Year’s Day.
