Sellers wins in return

Shane Sellers made a triumphant return from retirement Thursday night at Evangeline Downs, booting home his only mount on the program. Riding for former riding contemporary Mark Guidry, Sellers settled off the pace aboard Ide Ball ($9.20), and they rallied smartly on the outside to win going away by almost thee lengths in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint for $25,000 Louisiana-bred claimers.

Sellers, 42, had not ridden for over four years after announcing his retirement following a serious knee injury. Sellers is a native of Erath, La., and his first win came in 1983 when he was a 16-year-old at the old Evangeline Downs in nearby Carencro.

Sellers rode Ide Ball at the assigned weight of 123. Sellers will return to action next Wednesday when he will ride Excellent Appeal for former rider C. J. Woodley in the evening's fifth race and Private Cherry for trainer Sam Breaux one race later.
