Trainer Joe Orseno has done a masterful job managing Rezasrolex, a 5-year-old gelding who brings a nine-race winning streak into Saturday’s five-furlong Turf Dash Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. A horse Orseno claimed for $16,000 in December 2023, Rezasrolex has been running in mostly starter allowance or statebred allowance company. “I equate it to managing Mike Tyson fighting grade-school kids,” Orseno said. Saturday, Rezasrolex steps up in weight class when he faces the likes of Coppola and My Boy Prince in the $100,000 Turf Dash at Tampa Bay Downs. The Turf Dash goes as the final race on a 10-race program on a day when Tampa celebrates its 100th anniversary. “I kept him in the easiest company I could find for the longest time,” Orseno said. “It’s time to step up.” :: Celebrating 100 Years of racing at Tampa Bay Downs! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Rezasrolex, a son of Bucchero, has had most of his success on the front end and on the synthetic surface at Gulfstream Park. He’s won on turf in his last two starts, including an open-company second-level allowance at Tampa where he sat just off a strong early pace. One of Orseno’s concerns Saturday is Rezasrolex breaks from post 3 in a bulky 12-horse field. “I only hope this horse doesn’t get trapped down on the rail,” Orseno said. “He’s got enough tactical speed to put himself where he needs to be.” Orseno also runs Extendo and And Uwish in the Turf Dash. Extendo, beaten a neck in this race in 2024, is making his first start since August. Orseno said the horse was sidelined by a minor injury but seems to be doing well now. And Uwish has been facing the likes of Litigation and Reef Runner, either of whom would vie for favoritism in this spot. Coppola, a six-time stakes winner, finished sixth in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint on Jan. 24. Trainer Dale Romans said the ground was “a little soft” that day and the 7-year-old horse would prefer firmer footing. My Boy Prince finished third, beaten a neck in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint. He came in some in the stretch under John Velazquez in that race, which may have caused Unconquerable Queen to clip heels and unseat jockey Umberto Rispoli, who suffered a broken ankle. Samuel Marin rides My Boy Prince on Saturday. Works for Me makes his first start since last June 4, when he finished second to Bring Theband Home, whose final time of 59.90 seconds for 5 1/2 furlongs was .10 seconds off the Saratoga course record set by Cogburn in 2024. Can’t Deny It, cross-entered in the Colonel Power Stakes at Fair Grounds, is expected to run at Tampa, said trainer Larry Rivelli, citing a more favorable weather forecast. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Lightning City Creed’s Gold, winner of the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes at Woodbine last July, makes her first start since in Saturday’s $100,000 Lightning City Stakes for females going five furlongs on turf. Trainer Mark Casse said he stopped on Creed’s Gold because he just wasn’t happy with the way she was doing coming out of the Hendrie. “I do that a lot when we can’t really pinpoint an issue and just let Mother Nature go to work,” Casse said. “Five-eighths could be a tad short for her, but she’s a pretty good horse.” Love Appeals, a 6-year-old daughter of Speightstown, is coming off a third-place finish to the streaking Moon Spun in the Abundantia Stakes at Gulfstream on Dec. 27. Trainer Miguel Clement said this is one of two races Love Appeals is likely to run in before she is bred later this spring. The Grade 3 Monrovia at Santa Anita in April is a target as he seeks to get Love Appeals graded black type. Etrurian, trained by Orseno, has finished behind Moon Spun in two straight starts. Though she is entered in a dirt race at Gulfstream on Sunday, Orseno said he plans to keep her in the Lightning City. “She’s run against that beast of Brian Lynch’s [Moon Spun] twice and didn’t get embarrassed either time,” Orseno said. “Just off the strength of those races, she fits.” Demar’s Legacy has won three straight against lesser quality over Gulfstream’s synthetic surface. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
