LEXINGTON, Ky. – New weekend, same outlook. Six days after Chad Brown sent out a trio of 3-year-old turf fillies in a graded stakes at Keeneland, the scenario will repeat itself Friday when Blowout, Catch a Bid, and Turf War represent the powerhouse stable among an oversubscribed field in the Grade 3, $150,000 Valley View Stakes. Brown won the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup here last Saturday with Cambier Parc, one of three fillies he saddled for the Grade 1 turf race. The three-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer will be looking for something similar when the Valley View is run at 1 1/16 miles, a half-furlong shorter than the QE II. Blowout, a remarkably consistent and handy filly who might well have fit in the QE II, merits the favorite’s role in what shapes up as a terrific betting race. Owned by Peter Brant, the English-bred has been first or second in all but one of her seven career starts, and her lone third-place finish came in a three-way photo for win. Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who within the last month has won seven graded stakes across the map, including the QE II on Cambier Parc, will be aboard Blowout when breaking from post 2. Catch a Bid (post 7, Irad Ortiz Jr.) is a neck shy of being unbeaten in her three career starts and comes off a gutsy victory in the Riskaverse at Saratoga. Turf War (post 10, Joel Rosario) will try two turns for the first time after suggesting she wants more ground, most notably in an eye-catching last-to-first run in the six-furlong Christiecat over the Belmont Park turf last month. For bettors with Brown fatigue syndrome just wanting something different, there are viable options aplenty in this 29th running of the Valley View. Lady Prancealot (post 12, Joe Bravo) was scratched off the program from the QE II. She would benefit from a hotly contested pace, having developed an effective late kick on her home California circuit for trainer Richard Baltas. Carnival Colors (post 3, Jose Ortiz), winner of the Virginia Oaks, and Maxim Rate (post 9, Ricardo Santana Jr.), a graded winner in from California, were deemed to be of sufficient quality to be invited to the QE II before their connections declined. Winter Sunset (post 4, Channing Hill) is one of a handful of fringe players, having used a flashy rally to win the $200,000 Indiana Grand last month for trainer Wayne Catalano. “This is not an easy race, but not too many of them at Keeneland are,” Catalano said. “Our filly is doing really good. She’s coming off a nice victory and hopefully there’ll be some pace up front to help her out. It’d be great to see her run big.” In all, 15 are entered, although only as many as 14 can start. Dalika, the only also-eligible, will run with Miguel Mena riding after She’sonthewarpath is scratched by trainer Steve Margolis. The Valley View is the ninth of 10 races on a Friday card that also includes three allowances (races 5, 7, 8) and is part of a late pick four (races 7-10) with a $200,000 pool guarantee. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern, with the feature set for 5:30 p.m. The Friday forecast calls for sunshine and a high of 65.
