Second-generation progeny of Uncle Mo continue to excel

Uncle Mo is, in less than a decade with runners on the track, already an accomplished classic influence as the sire of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and Belmont Stakes winner Mo Donegal. With his progeny continuing to produce runners who excel in the second generation, he added another accomplishment to his résumé as the broodmare sire of recent Kentucky Oaks winner Thorpedo Anna. He has a chance to continue building his reputation in that regard with Muth, one of the favorites for the Preakness Stakes.
Trainer Kenny McPeek said he sees a good deal of Uncle Mo, physically, in Thorpedo Anna, by Fast Anna. She is the second winner from as many starters out of the stallion’s unraced daughter Sataves. The mare was born prematurely and became a successful broodmare thanks to the care of Thorpedo Anna’s breeder and co-owner Judy Hicks – although she never grew much beyond 15 hands.
“She has the body of Uncle Mo but the legs of a pony,” Hicks said.
Arkansas Derby winner Muth, by Good Magic, is the first foal out of the winning Uncle Mo mare Hoppa. He and Thorpedo Anna are among 10 graded stakes winners out of Uncle Mo mares in the last year. The group also includes Grade 1 Haskell winner Geaux Rocket Ride; graded stakes winners Instant Coffee, Interstatedaydream, Major General, Petulante, Southlawn, and West Saratoga; and Puerto Rican group stakes winner Alway’s Comerio.
This group of winners was produced by crossing many different sirelines over Uncle Mo, but there are some patterns. Muth and West Saratoga are both by sons of Curlin, while Thorpedo Anna and Instant Coffee are both by sons of Medaglia d’Oro. Interstatedaydream, Petulante, and Southlawn are all by stallions from branches of the Unbridled sireline, and Major General and Alway’s Comerio are both by sons of Tapit. Geaux Rocket Ride was sired by Candy Ride.
Uncle Mo is following in the footsteps of his sire, Indian Charlie, and grandsire, In Excess, as a successful broodmare sire. Indian Charlie is the broodmare sire of 117 stakes winners to date, led by unbeaten Horse of the Year Flightline, Eclipse Award champion Mitole, classic-placed Grade 1 winner Hot Rod Charlie, Canadian champions Biofuel and Tu Endie Wei, and Grade/Group winners Ceiling Crusher, Dayoutoftheoffice, Go Vivian Go, Lyndacarter, and Switzerland.
In Excess is the broodmare sire of 72 stakes winners, led by Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming, Eclipse champion Amazombie, and Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick.
