Seaside Retreat works, in Derby

Seaside Retreat, who finished sixth in the Blue Grass Stakes in his last start after running second in the Lane's End Stakes, worked well enough on Thursday morning at Churchill Downs to earn a berth in the Kentucky Derby on May 6, according to trainer Mark Casse.

Casse had said that Seaside Retreat's Derby status would be determined by the work. After the drill, which Daily Racing Form clocked in 59.54 seconds for five furlongs, Casse said Seaside Retreat would run.

Patrick Husbands, who will ride Seaside Retreat in the Derby, was aboard for the work.

Seaside Retreat is currently 19th on the graded stakes earnings list among Derby contenders. His Derby status still has both Flashy Bull and Sunriver on the outside looking in, though Flashy Bull could move into the Derby pending the status of Mister Triester following his expected start in Saturday's Derby Trial.
