ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Sean McCarthy recently reopened a stable at Santa Anita after spending four months as an assistant to Michael McCarthy in Southern California. Sean McCarthy disbanded his stable prior to the Del Mar summer meeting to join Michael McCarthy’s staff. The two trainers are not related. Sean McCarthy, who turned 57 on Sunday, has had four starters since he returned to training in late November, including Heathers Grey, who finished third in the Miss America Stakes at Golden Gate Fields in December. Friday, McCarthy had two second-place finishes, with Ivorian at Golden Gate Fields and Roaring Fork at Santa Anita. “I’m back on my own,” McCarthy said on Sunday. “It was great being with Michael. I got an opportunity to pick some up horses and I enjoy being on my own.” Sean McCarthy is best known for winning the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita with Majestic Harbor. He currently has eight horses in his stable, and is looking to expand. “I’d like to have 25,” he said.
