Sea Dub dangerous if he's able to stalk

Mary Rampellini|Sep 03, 2005

Sea Dub paid $109 the last time he raced in a stakes at 1 1/8 miles. He again races in a 1 1/8-mile stakes on Monday, when he will be one of the favorites in the $125,000 DeBartolo Memorial Breeders' Cup Handicap at Remington Park.

The turf race is one of three stakes on a holiday card that will have a first post of 2:30 p.m. Central. The DeBartolo will be supported by the $40,000 Ricks Memorial for fillies and mares on turf, and the $40,000 Clever Trevor for 2-year-olds.

Sea Dub will face six others in the DeBartolo, including Rapid Proof, the 120-pound highweight for his win in the $216,000 Connally Breeders' Cup at Sam Houston Race Park; Waupaca, a multiple stakes winner; and Mr. Mabee, who in July romped in the Claiming Crown Emerald.

Sea Dub was 53-1 when he won the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup at Lone Star on June 18 by stalking the pace. Since that start he has raced once, finishing third in an allowance at Louisiana Downs. Sea Dub finished a length behind stakes winners Zydeco Affair and Northern Scene after setting the pace in the 1 1/16-mile turf race.

"The way the race set up last time, he was the speed and that's not him," said Joe Petalino, who trains Sea Dub. "This time I imagine he ought to be able to run the same kind of race he ran at Lone Star."

Petalino is hopeful Sea Dub will get a stalking trip behind Waupaca, a front-runner who drew the rail, and Runaway Choice, another front-runner who is fresh. Mr. Mabee, who last raced at one mile, might also be part of the pace.

Sea Dub, in his final prep for the DeBartolo, worked five furlongs in 59.40 seconds at his home base of Remington on Aug. 29.

Rapid Proof ships in from Churchill Downs, and like Sea Dub he would benefit from an honest pace. Rapid Proof also gets back to his best distance after closing for fourth last out in the $85,000 West Virginia Speaker's Cup at Mountaineer.

Others of interest in the field include Waupaca, who has won two stakes in his last four starts, and Runaway Choice, who last out was a close third in the $75,000 Bob Johnson Memorial on the main track at Lone Star on July 17.

That race has since become a key one, with winner Shaky Town returning in his next start to capture the $100,000 Evangeline Mile, and runner-up Majestic Thief winning the $40,000 Blue Skies. The last time Runaway Choice raced on the grass he won an allowance.

Dontbotherknocking, who was entered in the $50,000 Sport City at Louisiana Downs for Sunday, and Shrewd Deputy, complete the field for what is the richest turf race at Remington.

* Out Our Way brings strong company lines into the Clever Trevor. In his last start he dueled on the lead and finished third in the $73,000 Middleground to Premier Dance, who after that Lone Star race won the $50,000 Minstrel at Louisiana Downs.

* The rail-drawn Paz Ciudadana figures to have to hold off My Misty Princess in the Ricks. In her last start, Paz Ciudadana raced close to the front throughout to win the Margarita at Retama, and since the race runner-up Rose Hunter has won an allowance.Sea Dub paid $109 the last time he raced in a stakes at 1 1/8 miles.
