OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainers Ray Handal and Chad Summers will be looking at stakes at Turfway Park after having to scratch horses out of stakes races they were entered in Tuesday at Parx due to a case of equine herpesvirus at that track. Parx was placed under quarantine, and horses who raced there this week or who are stabled there are not permitted to leave the grounds until the quarantine is lifted. Handal said he would look to run the 3-year-old colt Constitutionlawyer in the $600,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks on April 2. Constitutionlawyer was entered in Tuesday’s $100,000 City of Brotherly Love Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race around two turns. :: Want the best bonus in racing? Code: WINNING On Jan. 2, Constitutionlawyer won a 1 1/8-mile maiden race by 3 1/2 lengths at Aqueduct, earning an 85 Beyer Speed Figure. He was sent off the 5-1 second choice in the Grade 3 Withers Stakes on Feb. 5, but retreated and finished last after chasing the early pace of front-running winner Early Voting. Handal said the horse came out of the race in good order and that he doesn’t really have an excuse as to why he didn’t run well. “He trains too good not to be all right,” Handal said. “[Early Voting] was just too good. Sometimes horses get their hearts ripped out. When you chase and chase it’s hard to keep going when you don’t get there.” Handal believes that if Constitutionlawyer could run back to his maiden race he should be competitive in the Jeff Ruby, run at 1 1/8 miles over Turfway’s synthetic surface. Summers plans to ship Champagne Poetry to Turfway for the $250,000 Bourbonette Oaks on the same April 2 card. Champagne Poetry was scratched out of Tuesday’s $100,000 Main Line Stakes for 3-year-old fillies going a mile and 70 yards. Champagne Poetry was coming off a nose loss to Shotgun Hottie in the seven-furlong Ruthless Stakes on Feb. 6. Other New York-based horses who were scratched out of stakes on Tuesday at Parx include Early Glow from the Main Line and Rosebug from the $100,000 Society Hill Stakes at six furlongs. Bill Mott, who trains both those fillies, said Rosebug will run in the $100,000 Cicada at Aqueduct on March 19. Ready to March, trained by James Chapman, scratched out of the Rittenhouse Square Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters. He was entered back for a starter allowance on Sunday’s card at Aqueduct. Courvoisier, who shipped from New York and finished last of three in the City of Brotherly Love, has to stay at Parx until the quarantine at the track is lifted and the New York Racing Association allows horses at Parx to ship into New York. ◗ Agility, second to undefeated Barese in the Rego Park Stakes, and Rotknee, a winner of two straight races, were among five horses entered Friday for Sunday’s $100,000 Damon Runyon Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-olds. Sharp debut winner Best Idea, G Munning, and Mister Larry complete the field. The Damon Runyon goes as race 6 on a nine-race card. ◗ Disco Pharoah, who won a maiden race last Saturday here by 19 1/2 lengths, will point to a first-level allowance on the April 9 Wood Memorial card, trainer Ray Handal said. “He’s a 4-year-old,” Handal said. “It’s not like you’re under any type of a time constraint. His feet have always kind of been biting him. That’s been his thing from Day One. But he’s got a lot of heart.”
