OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Bill Mott has won the last two runnings of the Vosburgh Stakes with horses who would go on to win a Breeders’ Cup race and become champions. It remains to be seen if Scotland can attain the lofty accomplishments his former stablemates Cody’s Wish and Elite Power did, but Saturday he will be given the opportunity to become a graded stakes winner in the $250,000 Vosburgh at Aqueduct. Despite the victories by Elite Power, who won the 2022 Vosburgh and the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and was named champion sprinter, and Cody’s Wish who would win the 2023 Vosburgh and then the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and be named Horse of the Year, the Vosburgh was demoted to Grade 3 status by the North American Graded Stakes Committee for this year’s running. The Vosburgh, run at seven furlongs, is a Win and You’re In race for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint, run at six furlongs, on Nov. 2 at Del Mar. At this time last year, Scotland was competing in route races. He won the Curlin Stakes, at 1 1/8 miles, before running sixth and 10th, respectively, in the Travers and Pennsylvania Derby. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! It took him four tries to break through the third-level allowance condition, something he did July 26 at Saratoga, drawing off to a three-length victory. “He ran better than I thought he was ready to run and really drew away,” Mott said. “He’s doing quite well. We’ve given him a little time in between, and it seems like he’s bounced back well.” Mott also entered Baby Yoda, who won the Grade 2 True North at Saratoga impressively in June, but was fourth in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt and Grade 1 Forego. Baby Yoda did win a seven-furlong allowance at Aqueduct in the spring. Dean Delivers rides a four-race winning streak – all listed stakes – into the Vosburgh. On July 28, Dean Delivers won the Frank J. De Francis Memorial at Laurel and on Sept. 1 he became the fourth next-out winner from that race when he captured the Rumson Stakes at Monmouth. Dean Delivers is 4 for 4 since coming into the barn of trainer Ned Allard. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. entered both Lord Miles and Comedy Town, but plans to scratch Comedy Town to run in the Phoenix next week at Keeneland. Lord Miles is winless in seven starts since he upset the Grade 2 Wood Memorial at 59-1 in April 2023. Joseph prefers him in shorter races, a fact driven home when he finished last in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic, a three-turn, 1 1/8-mile race won by Joseph’s Skippylongstocking last out. “I thought he might like it; he ran no good, regressed,” Joseph said. Joseph said a small field and an outside post should benefit Lord Miles in the Vosburgh. “He doesn’t like kickback too well and we’re coming back to a track where he had his best performance,” Joseph said. Mufasa, coming off an allowance win Aug. 12 at Colonial Downs, will run here and not the Ack Ack, a race Saturday at Churchill Downs in which he also was entered. Seven’s Eleven, a sharp allowance winner Sept. 7 at Laurel, will be making his third start in five weeks. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
