Scoops Dynasty streaks into Golden State Derby

Steve Andersen|Aug 12, 2022

Scoops Dynasty is not only unbeaten in four starts at Los Alamitos this year, his Quarter Horse rivals are having difficulty getting close to him.

Scoops Dynasty has won each race by at least three-quarters of a length, a fair margin in 400-yard races. The dominance is why Scoops Dynasty will be favored to extend his winning streak in Sunday’s $210,000 Golden State Derby, the track’s leading race for 3-year-olds of the summer.

Owned by Ed and Von Zae McNelis and trained by Monty Arrossa, Scoops Dynasty has won two stakes this year – the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in February and the California Derby Challenge in May.

A winner of 5 of 9 starts, Scoops Dynasty won the first of two time trials for the Golden State Derby on July 24, finishing 400 yards in 19.892 seconds. Dasha Dynasty won the second trial in the slightly slower time of 19.896.

Scoops Dynasty won the trial by 1 3/4 lengths over Insider Information who was timed in 20.17. Dasha Dynasty won his trial by 1 1/2 lengths over Set for It, who was clocked in 20.13. The 10 fastest runners from the two trials advanced to the final. Those happened to be the first five finishers in each trial.

Dasha Dynasty is one of three finalists trained by Jose Flores and two are half-brothers. Dasha Dynasty, by Fdd Dynasty, and Dasha Good Reason, by Good Reason Sa, are out of Dasha Freda, one of Quarter Horse racing’s most successful mares in the last decade.

Dasha Freda, the dam of 2015 World Champion Heza Dasha Fire, had three registered foals in 2019, bred via embryo transfer.

A win by Dasha Dynasty would not be a surprise, considering his trial race win, but Dasha Good Reason will be a longshot. Dasha Good Reason was third behind Scoops Dynasty in the trials, overcoming a troubled start.

The trial race was Dasha Good Reason’s first start since a fourth-place finish in the El Primero Del Ano Derby in March.

The Golden State Derby is the final race on Sunday evening’s 10-race program. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
