Scoops Dynasty extends win streak to five in Golden State Derby
CYPRESS, Calif. – Scoops Dynasty has no peers among the 3-year-old Quarter Horses in California this year.
On Sunday at Los Alamitos, Scoops Dynasty extended his unbeaten record in 2022 to five races with a remarkably easy three-length win in the $210,000 Golden State Derby, the track’s leading summertime race for the division.
Ridden by Armando Cervantes, Scoops Dynasty ($3) was away well, led by more than two lengths midway through the 400-yard race, and won comfortably over 12-1 Set for It. Dasha Dynasty (3-1) and Griffindore (54-1) finished in a dead heat for third in the field 10, beaten 3 1/2 lengths.
Scoops Dynasty, trained by Monty Arrossa, was timed in 19.50 seconds and earned $88,200 for owners and breeders Ed and Von Zae McNelis of Idaho.
By Fdd Dynasty, Scoops Dynasty has won 6 of 10 starts and earned $245,540. Earlier this year, Scoops Dynasty won the Los Alamitos Winter Derby in February and the California Derby Challenge in May.
Ed McNelis said in the winner’s circle that the Los Alamitos Super Derby on Nov. 6 is a goal for Scoops Dynasty. Trials for that race will be run Oct. 16. The Super Derby is the track’s toughest race of the year for 3-year-olds, often drawing runners who spent the summer at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico.
