Scoobie Quando debuts with Turfway Prevue triumph
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
Debut starter Scoobie Quando broke onto the scene with a gritty score in the $125,000 Turfway Prevue on Saturday at the epynomous Florence, Ky., track.
Scoobie Quando ($4.92) and jockey Luan Machado raced in third early and were never out of striking range in a short field of five 3-year-olds for the 6 1/2-furlong race. Set down in earnest leaving the quarter pole, Scoobie Quando responded to wear down tenacious pacesetter Retained in the stretch, winning by a neck. They stopped the clock in 1:17.28 on the Tapeta.
After Retained, it was 3 1/2 lengths back to Schifty's Haloid. They were followed home by Accident and Prove Right.
Scoobie Quando was making his debut for trainer Ben Colebrook and owners Andrew and Rania Warren. The son of classic sire Uncle Mo and out of multiple graded stakes-winning turf mare Daveron had been working steadily through the fall and early winter at Keeneland, with two recent breezes on the track's synthetic training track to prepare for his Turfway debut. Colebrook had cross-entered the colt in a maiden race on Friday night at Turfway, but he failed to draw-in off the also-eligible list, setting him up for a prime assignment.
The Prevue was the first of the stakes for 3-year-old males at Turfway Park this winter and spring. The track's longer-distance series culminates with the $700,000 Jeff Ruby on March 25, a race that awards the winner 100 points toward the Kentucky Derby. Last year's edition produced upset Derby winner Rich Strike.
