SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sconsin came closer to beating Gamine than anyone has in a one-turn race, getting beat 1 1/2 lengths by the champion female sprinter in the Derby City Distaff. Trained by Greg Foley, Sconsin will try Gamine again in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Ballerina at Saratoga. In the Derby City Distaff, Gamine stumbled at the break, but was able to quickly recover and make an easy lead. Still, Foley felt good about Sconsin’s chances in upper stretch. “I thought we had her at the eighth pole, actually,” he said. “We didn’t get the job done, but she made you stand up there for a second.” Foley is hoping for someone to run with Gamine early in the seven-furlong Ballerina, but didn’t see any real speed in the field, which includes Lake Avenue, Casual, Ce Ce, Estilo Talentoso, and Truth Hurts. Gamine, who won the Grade 1 Test here last year, drew the rail and is the 126-pound highweight. Gamine will be conceding 3 to 12 pounds to the rest of the field.
