RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sconsin made a successful return to action Monday by winning the Grade 3, $199,500 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs for the second straight year.
Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Sconsin wore down race-long pacesetter Joyful Cadence with a relentless run in the final quarter-mile of the six-furlong Winning Colors, prevailing by three-quarters of a length. The winner returned $3 as the heavy favorite in a field of five fillies and mares after finishing in 1:08.18 over a fast track.
“I never got her out of second gear,” Gaffalione said with a grin.
“She ran great,” said Greg Foley, who trains 5-year-old Sconsin for the Lloyd Madison Farms of Fred Schwartz and partners. “A really good comeback race. I thought we had her ready to go. We’ll go on from here.”

Sconsin, by Include, now has won 6 of 16 starts and $906,862. The Kentucky-bred bay with a prominent blaze was making her first start in more than eight months after ending her 4-year-old season with a victory in the Open Mind here last September under Gaffalione. She was fourth behind winner Gamine in the 2020 BC Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland, and Foley said she likely will have two or three more starts and try to make it back to that seven-furlong race, set for Nov. 5.
Lil Tootsie was another three lengths back in third, followed by Novel Squall and Tipsy Gal. Euphoric was an early scratch from the 19th Winning Colors, named in honor of the 1988 Kentucky Derby-winning filly trained by D. Wayne Lukas.
The $2 exacta (3-1) paid $12.40 and the $1 trifecta (3-1-4) returned $22.50.
After Monday, Churchill goes dark for two days before a four-day race week starts Thursday with an eight-race twilight card.
